“Ellen Show” Sets Up New Lesbian Comedy Titled “You and Me and He”

Writer-comedian Carol Leifer, who created CBS’ “The Ellen Show,” has reunited with the network for a lesbian comedy partly inspired by her own experiences.

The project, tentatively titled “You and Me and He,” centers on a recently divorced woman who enters a gay relationship only to find out that she is pregnant with her ex-husband’s baby. (In real life, Leifer became a lesbian when she was 40, 10 years after her divorce, and has adopted a son with her partner.)

The project is one of two half-hour projects that Leifer has in the works. The Showtime comedy “Mouthpiece” is set at a high-powered law firm. It also has a lesbian connection since it will star Marlee Matlin who recently co-starred on the cable channel’s “The L Word.”

Perhaps more intriguingly, Matlin starred in the “Lip Reader” episode on “Seinfeld,” which Leifer wrote. Matlin, with whom Leifer had stayed in touch since the 1993 episode, approached the writer with the idea that she and actor-comedian Mario Cantone had come up with.

Leifer, who has known Cantone since their early stand-up days at the Improv, quickly jumped on board.

I love the synchronicity of it – we all have worked together,” said Leifer, who recently published her first book, the best-selling compilation of humorous essays “When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win.
